The Music Ministry of St. Ignatius Church uses the talents of the parish's volunteer singers and instrumentalists to give glory to God through leading the assembly in song during the liturgies and through annual concerts and other special events. The music program at St. Ignatius is led by Dr. Brian DuSell. At the heart of the St. Ignatius music ministry are three choirs that serve the parish. All of the singers in these choirs are volunteers who give most generously of their time and talent. New members are always welcome in the choirs and in fact very much enrich the experience for all of the choir members. Please contact Dr. DuSell via telephone (773) 764-5936 ext. 17 or via e-mail: music@stignatiuschurch.org if you would like to join a choir.
The Parish Choir is an SATB (soprano-alto-tenor-bass) chorus for teens and adults that rehearses weekly on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-9:00PM and from 9:15-9:45AM on Sunday mornings and sings for the 10AM mass each Sunday. The parish choir sings a wide range of repertoire including hymnody, chant, Renaissance polyphony, choral anthems, and contemporary music. For many liturgies, the parish choir sings from the music area at the front of the church and is accompanied by the piano and guitar. At other times, the choir sings from the rear balcony and is accompanied by the organ. While the primary function of this choir is to lead the singing of the liturgy at the Sunday10AM mass, its members routinely participate in St. Ignatius parish's concerts including the Sing-Along Messiah presented each December and the Spring Concert presented in late May or early June each year.
The Coro Hispano is a teen and adult choir which currently rehearses on Sunday mornings at 11:30AM and sings in Spanish for the 12PM mass each Sunday. This choir sings beautiful Hispanic liturgical songs and often sings together with the Hispanic children's choir, the Coro de Niņos. The choir is accompanied by piano, bass, and percussion.
The Coro de Niņos is the parish's primary children's choir which rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm-7:30pm and sings for the 12pm mass once a month. This choir is open to children between the ages of 7 and 13. A wonderful feature of this choir is that the choristers receive training not only in basic singing skills, but also are taught music reading skills (reading and pitching notes in the treble clef, how to read and count rhythms, and sight-singing). Choristers who are a part of this choir usually learn thirty to forty songs a season. They learn a repertory of beautiful sacred music that they will know and sing for the rest of their lives. The sessions are taught in English and in Spanish. and are open to all children ages 7 and older who are able to consistently attend rehearsals.
While the Parish does not currently have a separate children's choir which serves the English language masses, it is our great hope to establish such a choir. In order to begin this choir, we would need eight interested and dedicated children. At this time, talented, disciplined children and youth are allowed to sing with the parish choir. Please contact Dr. DuSell if you would like your child to participate in choir.
If you would like to become a member of one of the St. Ignatius choirs, please call Dr. DuSell at (773) 764-5936 ext. 17 or by e-mail. Dr. DuSell asks that each new choir member sing a simple vocal audition. This is so that Dr. DuSell can evaluate your vocal abilities and best know how to instruct you. |
