The St. Ignatius Canteen before and after renovation in 2004
The first step in our restoration and remodeling of the Canteen space in the basement of the church was the demolition of the old space, including removal of counters and ceiling as well damaged areas of the walls. Much of this work was done by our own maintenance engineer, Pat O'Malley, whose skill with a sledge hammer is unparalleled, and volunteer Larry Dorn, an electrician who will be helping us to upgrade the wiring. A group of volunteers from our Hispanic community, lead by Miguel Uruchima, helped as well, especially with the painting! Among the things that will be salvaged from the old canteen is the mural of the Chicago Skyline which many of our alumni will remember. The work crew found vintage Coca Cola and Pepsi bottles in the walls.
This photo shows Sigmunt Kimmel of the Fresco Art Company who is the outstanding restorer of the Chapel, the vestibule, and the main church ceiling We invite you to join us for Sunday Mass to see all of his beautiful work for yourself. |
